Maria went to stay here and was knocked out by the service, the hospitality and the highy quality boutique room accommodation- a perfect escape for a grown up getaway!

The Killarney Royal is a superb 4-star luxury boutique hotel, right in the heart of Killarney.  This is ideal for a romantic break, with the majestic beauty of Killarney and the rest of County Kerry's spectacular coastal and mountainous scenery right on your door step.

After only one hour's drive from Cork, taking in stunning scenery of lakes & mountains on the way, this quickly reminded me why this is known as the Emerald Isle.

From the moment you enter The Killarney Royal Hotel, it is clear the pride the Scally Family take in their beautiful hotel which has been in their family now for 3 generations.  What you see on their web-site is exactly what you get.  The proprietors are Joe & Margaret Scally and the hotel is run by their son and daughter, Brian & Claire.  This former Coach House has retained the old world charm in keeping with the age of the building & has been maintained to a very high standard.

Our arrival here was typical of the warmth of the Irish hospitality but I would say this family run hotel goes one step further to ensure your stay is a most memorable one.

Once settled in our room, we were keen to sample the food in the Royal Bar & Bistro. The attention to detail & quality of the food was exceptional and the ambience in the bar was very conducive to enjoying a relaxing lunch. The décor is a perfect blend of old & new. There was subtle traditional Irish music in the background.

Our room was spacious, bright & lavishly furnished with elegant décor & plush interiors. The little details made a big difference like plasma TV, air-conditioning, chocolates on the bed on arrival; water with an ice bucket; robes & slippers in the bathroom; elemis products; trouser press & iron and for the golf enthusiasts, mini-golf to practice before playing a round or two.  The marble bathroom was subtly lit which allows for a relaxing bath.

This is an intimate hotel with 29 rooms all individually decorated by Margaret Scally. For personal comfort, there are comfy down duvets or a traditional Irish woollen blankets which are especially cosy on a winter's nights.  For a very special occasion, you can stay in one of the Junior Suites, which have a separate living area - ideal for a private in-room dining experience.

While there isn't a Spa here, guests have complimentary access to a nearby Spa and Leisure facility.  When I enquired about a Spa beforehand, Brian very kindly offered to organise an in-house treatment for me. Catherine, the massage therapist, was very professional & holistic in her approach. It was very relaxing to be able to have the treatment in my room.

The Killarney Royal prides itself on its award winning cuisine & offers a wide selection of gourmet food, produced from locally sourced ingredients such as Dingle Bay Lobster and Kerry Spring Lamb. We dined in the elegant Royal Restaurant on the Saturday night which was a lovely experience.  The Restaurant is very lavishly furnished with silver service.  Again the attention to detail & the quality of the food was exceptional.  We were graciously accommodated with different requirements.

Our Sunday morning breakfast was a feast in itself.  We didn't have to rush like some places and dining in the elegant ambiance was very relaxing. The full Irish Breakfast was freshly cooked & served which is a rare treat these days.

There were beautiful old & new paintings & photographs on all the walls, not too many, just enough.  One feature that I thought very unique was a Book Swap Box for guests on the landing of the 2nd floor.  There is plenty to do here- take a stroll around the town, enjoy a drink and the craic in one of the pubs, browse in a gallery or local shop.  You can also take a horse and trap tour around the many Kerry attractions such as the gap of Dunloe & Muckross House or visit the many vast beaches along the Dingle Peninsula. There is golf, fishing, sailing, trekking, cycling, cookery schools, art studios and many more activities all nearby.

The staff at The Killarney Royal are exceptional, with a genuine friendliness & interest in you. Many are local people and a testimony to the Scally Family is that 3 of their staff have been with them for over 20 years including their Head Chef.

The Killarney Royal Hotel is easily accessible. It is close to Cork & Farranfore Airports and the Cork Port (Swansea/Cork Ferries).  Because of its central location, for extra quietness, I would recommend requesting a room at the back of the hotel.

I have stayed in many hotels & this is up there as one of my favourites. I would definitely recommend it & look forward to making a return trip myself soon.

The Killarney Royal Hotel is the perfect place to stay for your romantic Irish break or for a getaway with friends. There is certainly something here for everyone, so please check out the website for seasonal offers and don't forget to mention Away without the Kids when booking!
