The Llawnroc Hotel, Cornwall

Chute Lane, Gorran Haven, St Austell, Cornwall

Room Service Restaurant Near a Beach

Frances and Ben Gilman visited on our behalf:

'Llawnroc' is 'Cornwall' spelt backwards. Aside from its name there's nothing backward about this hotel, a boutique getaway on the south Cornwall coast boasting fine dining and stylish rooms. The Llawnroc is situated in the small and friendly fishing village of Gorran Haven several miles south of St Austell. Wander through the narrow streets of the village and you will come across a pretty harbour; a short walk from there, down some steep steps, you will also find hidden away a picture-perfect sandy beach. Gorran Haven is on the South West coastal path, making it ideal for those interested in going on a scenic walk. It's a short drive to the fascinating and picturesque Lost Gardens of Heligan and the world-famous Eden Project and within very close distance are breathtaking beaches like Polkerris.

The Llanwnroc has a warm, attentive and extremely efficient staff only to happy to help make your trip away as extra-special as possible. The fabulously chic throne chairs in reception indicate what the rest of the hotel is like: regal, luxurious and yet modern. Downstairs is split between the welcoming Gwineas Bar and Bistro, Gorran's fine dining restaurant, a lively sunny terrace and a relaxing residents-only lounge stocked with board games and books on the local area. Food is available all day and when the sun shines you can't go wrong with lunch, drinks or afternoon tea on the terrace soaking up the views out across the cluster of cottage roofs and out to sea.

In the evening you won't want to miss the fine dining in the intimate setting of 'Gorran's', open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Local head chef, Neil Martin, has created a sumptuous four course menu; high quality Cornish cuisine at its best. Lavish interiors and fresh white tablecloths make this an extremely appealing dining option. Evening meals are also available in the welcoming Gwineas Bar and Bistro, where you can also partake in an exciting pre or post-dinner cocktail. The Gwineas Bar, with its locally-sourced food and friendly service, is a popular destination for both holidaymakers and the Gorran Haven community alike - you're as likely to overhear tourists excitedly discussing their day out as local fishermen discussing the weather.

When it's time for bed the hotel boasts eighteen en-suite guest bedrooms. The rooms at the front of the hotel offer elevated sea views and are situated above the terrace. During summer months these rooms may pick up on some of the noise and liveliness from below, however more tranquil rooms can be found on the other side of the hotel. All the rooms are resplendent in black, purple, gold and beige creating a deeply luxurious and cosmopolitan feel in the heart of the Cornish countryside. You'll know you've found a special hideaway when you realise there's no mobile phone signal! If the call of the outside world is too much, you can take advantage of free Wi-fi, and, of course, in-room telephones. Each room is also equipped with a Playstation 3 to play games, music and DVDs. Reception offers a range of free-to-hire DVDS and games to help you have that perfect night in luxury surroundings. The swanky bathrooms offer decadently deep baths and state-of-the-art showers. Complete the luxury with a nightcap from room service and drift off to sleep with your head on your chosen option from the pillow menu.

In the morning you can slowly enjoy a breakfast in the stylish restaurant with yet more fabulous service and a range of wonderful buffet, and cooked options. For a superb Cornish break consider spending a night or two at the Llawnroc Hotel, quoting "Grown-up Getaways".
