Peaceful and idyllic with wonderful views across the harbour and excellent cuisine
The Red Lion Hotel, in Clovelly, Devon, is a homely country inn with excellent food in a pretty harbour-side location. The hotel has free Wi-Fi and en suite bedrooms with striking sea or harbour views. There is free private parking. The Red Lion dates back to the 18th century, and was created from three cider houses where Clovelly fishermen gathered to swap their tales of fabulous catches and perilous seas. Book a romantic break at The Red Lion and discover the timeless village of Clovelly, where the steep, cobbled street tumbles down past gleaming white cottages to the tiny, deep-blue harbour...
Red Lion Rooms
Created from the inside of those cider lofts many centuries before, all bedrooms have been beautifully restored and boast either sea or harbour views.
They are all cosy and full of character and both the Rous and Cary rooms demand a small supplement as they have a balcony and bay window overlooking the sea and harbour.
Sail Loft
In true Clovelly style, these 6 fabulous deluxe bedrooms were created inside what was an old grade two sail loft. The Interior makes the best use of the size, height and airiness, with the soft furnishings blending Clovelly Rex Whistler's drawings into a soft nautical Clovelly theme. Under floor heating, amazing views of the bay and best of all understated luxury!
Red Lion Hotel Harbour Restaurant
Much is said these days about the impact of food miles, but at the Red Lion Harbour Restaurant, they can talk proudly as fresh fish is landed daily outside their door. They also use as much seasonal produce as possible and game from Clovelly estate.
Clovelly
At Clovelly you’ll enjoy a unique experience of a bygone age, a time when people lived a more tranquil way of life. No vehicles are allowed down the steep cobbled street, unless of course you stay at the Red Lion you get a pass down to your parking space by the harbour. Clovelly is a historical monument to so much that is true to Devonian Life and the owners of the village have worked tirlessly to ensure that the village doesn't change and become a Disney! Visit Clovelly Court, the
ancient manor house of the estate.
Its walled kitchen gardens, with restored
Victorian greenhouses, are open to visitors. Clovelly’s impressive quay dates back to the 14th century,
as do many of the cottages. The famous cobbled street was built from pebbles hauled
from the beach. One of the best ways to appreciate the stunning setting of
Clovelly is to stroll along the Hobby Drive. As it winds through
the woods, it gives magnificent glimpses of the harbour and
Bideford Bay. The coastal path in the opposite direction also
gives breathtaking views.
