Modern luxury mixed with old school charm, this is a unique and pretty spa hotel in Sussex.
Set in the picturesque town of Midhurst in Sussex, The Spread Eagle exudes character and history. On arrival Ben and I were instantly taken with this wonderful hotel, and were very excited to be staying. We loved the mix of traditional style with modern luxury and it sounds cheesy but we just knew as soon as we walked in that we would have a wonderful stay.
And we certainly did! From enjoying a cup of tea in the conservatory to spending an afternoon in the spa, or drinking a bottle of wine in the gorgeous 15th century lounge, it was a stay to remember and we’d highly recommend it for a grownup getaway.
Accommodation
There are numerous bedrooms and suites on offer to suit different budgets and requirements. We were lucky enough to be in the HG Wells a well appointed, comfortable suite on the ground floor, literally feet away from the bar. However two double doors provided plenty of soundproofing meaning we couldn’t hear a thing from the bar and restaurant, and we loved the convenience of being on the ground floor…especially when I kept on forgetting things I needed to take to the spa and had to run back to our room several times!
The king size bed provided a restful night after our three hour drive, and we were super comfortable for our stay. There’s a certain amount of noise because the hotel is located in the town centre but honestly, I’m a fairly light sleeper and am sensitive to noise and it was hardly an audible amount, just an occasional background murmur. We enjoyed chilling in our lounge area, eating complimentary biscuits freshly baked by the chef that morning and sipping tea before heading to the spa.
The modern, modest sized but beautiful bathroom had a powerful shower (over the bath) and a luxurious deep bath tub. I retreated there for a relaxing soak with the delicious-smelling Temple Spa toiletries before heading for my spa treatment.
Spa
The swimming pool and surrounds were a calm, soothing environment and made us feel properly in holiday mode. The Jacuzzi was a lovely place to wind down in, as was the sauna. A little outdoor area in the mini courtyard garden mean you can relax on sun loungers there to cool down. After a swim, sauna and Jacuzzi we felt much more jokey, fun and back to ourselves, with the stresses of daily life well and truly out of our minds.
I treated myself to a spa treatment and I’m so happy I did! I opted for a back massage, something that’s much needed for a tired parent! It was a really calming lovely experience and exactly right for what I needed. Ben didn’t go for a spa treatment on this occasion but there’s plenty for both men and women to choose from on the lovely spa treatments ‘menu’. I was very impressed and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
Food
The Spread Eagle restaurant serves modern classic British cuisine and I’m so thrilled we booked in for dinner. Our evening meal was utterly delicious, and the service was charming and lovely. We retired to the hotel bar for dessert (the most amazing crème brulee – I want one again right now!).
Lunch and snacks are served throughout the day in the conservatory, bar and on the terrace
Breakfast was beautifully ‘done’, a great selection of freshly baked pastries, cereal and fruit, and a divine selection of cooked options to order. The porridge was luxurious and the full English breakfasts set us up perfectly for the day of swimming and sightseeing.
Summary
It was a really nice atmosphere and we just enjoyed chilling out at the hotel, with little need to venture further afield. It provided everything we needed from comfortable bedroom to beautiful food to the tranquility of the spa. When you chat to fellow guests at the Spread Eagle it soon becomes apparent that once you’ve visited you’ll be back again and again! I love that about it…it shows it’s a special place. We too are now in that category and we hope to return again soon!
When booking don’t forget to mention ‘Grownup Getaways’.
