Wood Hall is a lovely base for romantic country walks and Yorkshire country sporting life.
The luxury comforts here make this a perfect place to relax and unwind.
We were very impressed by the magnificent driveway leading up to Wood Hall. A long and tree-lined road opens out to a stunning view of this lovely Georgian luxury country house hotel , part of the Luxury Handpicked Hotels Collection. The views over the nearby valley are amazing and it truly feels as if you are stepping out of the 21st century and into a bygone age
The building, originally built as a country house for the Vavasour family, has seen several transformations over the years. It has been a Carmelite convent and a boys' school in the past, and the building has retained much of its historical character. Afternoon teas are taken in the drawing room and evening meals are served in the splendid dining room which has large windows offering beautiful views of the grounds. The dinner menu offers a delicious range of choices and the staff on reception and in the restaurant were extremely pleasant and attentive.
This is a great place for a relaxing country retreat. The gardens are beautifully tended and wellington boots are stacked up in the hotel's reception area, should you wish to take a leisurely a stroll around the vast grounds.
The forty four rooms are tastefully furnished and the ensuite bathrooms are spacious and accommodating. Each room has a 42 inch television and DVD player, and there is plenty of opportunity for putting your feet up and taking it easy.
The adjoining spa area has a swimming pool, a spa pool, a steam room and two treatment rooms. There is also a small gymnasium, a nail station and lounge area.
This is an ideal venue for nature lovers and for people who enjoy sports and the great outdoors. Fishing is available in the local river which flows through the hotel grounds for over a mile and a half. If you catch a fish, you can hand it to the chef who will prepare it for your evening meal. Badger watching sometimes takes place in the evenings. There are some great golf courses in the region, the nearest ones being at Moor Allerton and Wetherby, as well as the several racing events held nearby. It's a great place for walking too.
Horticulturalists will enjoy visiting some of the finest gardens that Yorkshire has to offer. Harrogate, York and Leeds are only a stone's throw away, and the Italian gardens here are worth a visit in themselves. There are beehives, a vegetable garden and flowers in abundance in the one hundred acres of grounds.
